Perhaps the most striking difference between the Institut Hyperwerk – where I did my degree in Process Design – and almost any other degree programme is the absence of a curriculum and the associated trust in the intrinsic motivation of students, who spend three years working independently on their own projects. Since this approach stands out as an exception, I was of the view that what was needed above all was more such spaces for intrinsically motivated endeavours: meeting spaces that impose no content on their users while still offering exchange, community and infrastructure. With its proximity to nature as a source of inspiration, a place for retreat and work, and its geographical remoteness that shields one from the hustle of the outside world, Campi di Cascio turned out to be the perfect location for my project. In spring 2022, over the course of five weeks, more than twenty people gathered here to pursue intrinsically motivated projects. The space Freihype (freedom + Hyperwerk + being hyped) differed from an artist residency – despite an obvious similarity – in that it did not orient itself around the concept of art. This context posed the right questions and created the intellectual atmosphere for the rediscovery of the Arche and what followed from it.
