Overland travel has always fascinated me. Not only for ecological reasons, but also out of a profound love for the journey itself, one that surpasses the wish to arrive anywhere. In 2018 I fulfilled a long-held dream: from Switzerland to India — no planes, no ships, just overland travelling. Three months of preparation, meticulous route planning, embassy visits, and expensive visa services made me realize that travelling overland is far more complicated than arriving by plane: many countries only offer visa on arrival for air travellers, and border crossings on foot are often only passable for citizens of the neighbouring states. In summer 2018, I set off, across the Balkans to Istanbul, through Turkey into Iran — then, for security reasons, not the direct route through Pakistan, but via Central Asia: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and finally down the Karakoram Highway, crossing the Khunjerab Pass – shortly before its winter closure due to snow – into Pakistan and finally India. The journey taught me a great deal — about the world, about people, about myself. Based on entries in my journal I wrote eight pieces from the section of the route between Iran and Pakistan.
