Futures of Smoking explores how package design can be used for storytelling — raising questions about tomorrow rather than giving answers for today. The project consisted of a cigarette package, a website and a small exhibition. The package is a complete rebuild and redesign of the Swiss cigarette brand Parisienne — unfolded, measured, redrawn, printed, cut and reassembled into a new interpretation called Bersienne. This hands-on reconstruction gave the package an authentic look and feel, grounding speculative futures in a physical object you can actually touch. Rooted in research about global ties of the tobacco industry, three what-if questions sketched out scenarios this package could exist in. Every package contained twenty cigarettes, relabeled as Bersienne — that were given to visitors of the exhibition to encourage conversations about possible futures of smoking, while smoking.
