One of the people who helped build up Campi di Cascio in the nineties was Joel – who arrived in the middle of the night, during a heavy thunderstorm, and stayed. While bringing his knowledge of woodworking into the collaborative building process of Campi di Cascio, one day he decided to start a project of his own. Not far from the house, in the forest, he started forming clay bricks, cutting timber from the woods and collecting used materials in the surrounding areas. Nail by nail he created an incredibly playful and beautiful house which became his home for the coming years. Then – not long after the last nail was hammered in – he moved on to other parts of the world, and the Arche – as he named his building – was left to its own devices. Rain came in through a broken roof window for years. When Joel died in the winter of 2022, it was finally time to make decisions. The roof was beyond saving, the walls too unstable to carry a new one. A new plan was needed. We didn't want to give it up, so it had to be reinvented. Over the next two years, the Arche was — once again with the help of many friends — transformed into a new structure. What emerged is an open space that is allowed to keep changing, but Joel's spirit — in the way it was built, in the space, in the attitude — will remain.
